Obesity is one of the world's leading
preventable cause of death.
The 21st century exhibits the highest rates of obesity in adults and children to ever occur, because of poor nutrition and a lack of physical activity. This can easily be prevented but in order to treat obesity a constant effort to break habits must take place.
There are two huge factors which provide a
direct correlation to obesity in humans -
an unhealthy diet and little to no physical activity.
Living in the 21st century, there is a greater number of temptations to eat unhealthily than there ever was. Fast food joints pop up on every street corner, deep fried foods have become a necessity and media supports unhealthy products starting with young children. Fast food companies and other cereal, chip and pop companies have developed the perfect amount of fat, to sugar, to salt amounts in their food to make it irresistible and addicting to the public. Commercials for companies such as McDonalds, Fruit Loops, and many others include cartoon characters and a fun atmosphere which draws in young eyes and ensures they are hooked on the product at a young age to last their life-time. Teenagers start living their life at a young age where they play video games instead of physical activity. Their life is focused around screens instead of dedicating time and energy to keep their body fit and healthy.
Obesity happens one pound at a time, so does prevention.
Eating right requires much effort to say no to certain companies and advertising, to look at the food labels in detail for knowledge of what they are consuming and to be trained as to what the proper foods they should focus on. Eating the correct servings from all four food groups (dairy, grains, meats and fruits and veggies) according to Canada's Food Servings Guide is a great first step. This ensures that the individual is focusing on the amounts of food they eat. They should not over eat in any area as that will lead to obesity and they should not under eat as they will lack the required nutrients and constantly feel hungry. They also need to be conscious on the types of foods they are consuming. A variety should be achieved instead of eating, for example, all carbs or all meats. If the appropriate amounts of food are consumed from all food groups they will eat much healthier. Fast food stores, deep fried anything, excess carbs and many in-store packaged products contain very little nutritional value other than excess amounts of sugar and fat. These should be avoided. With constant control of ones diet, they will be able to slowly fight obesity.
Adding a physically active aspect to their life to avoid obesity works in line with eating healthily and is just as important. Even just working out for thirty minutes a few times a week can be extremely beneficial to a body's health. There is a type of physical activity for everyone. Some people like the social aspect and can joins teams such as soccer, hockey, lacrosse, basketball, zumba even and much more. Other people prefer solo types such as running, swimming, weight lifting. There are many fun and interactive types of activity that can be so enjoyable, they don't even realize it's helping your body. At first getting active can be hard but all it takes is a mindset to force themselves out and to just do it. A good first step is to simply be active for 30 minutes twice or three times a week, as they achieve this, add more sessions a week for longer durations. A great goal to reach is participating in some sort of activity once a day for at least 30 minutes. This will increase their level of fitness and decrease obesity while giving them great positive feelings towards themselves.
